Why the Democratic Party Refuses to Release their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: An Analysis.

This decision from the DNC to block the release regarding its own autopsy report on the 2024 election is shocking yet to be expected. Resistant to unpleasant candor, the Democrats' governing body operates closer to a communications shop than a political organization focused on building grassroots capacities to secure victories.

A Culture Resistant to Internal Critique

Reluctant to depart from the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has continued under the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Publishing the findings would have indicated whether the leadership are interested to promote open debate regarding the errors that enabled the former president to win re-election. Yet, the DNC is proceeding as if there is little to be learned from the stunning loss of 2024.

Our guiding principle: will this lead to victory? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from what truly matters," a rationale that has been offered to justify concealing the analysis.

Major Failures an Autopsy Would Have Explored

A genuine analysis with any value would tackle head-on certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Voter Disenchantment: Failing to retain of millions of voters who voted for the Democratic ticket during the previous election proved pivotal in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
  • A Decision to Seek Re-election: The unwavering decision of the incumbent to stay in the race, alongside a last-minute withdrawal, has been criticized as denying the party's base the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Abandoning Core Democratic Voters: While facing inflation, the electoral effort reportedly accommodating elite contributors and not managing to address the impact of big business.
  • The Foreign Policy Effect: The failure to adjust a stance on a ongoing war is cited as driving away many voters, especially among young people, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Youth Backing: Research demonstrates a significant drop-off of votes for the candidate among voters aged 18-29.

A History of Evasion

Choosing secrecy aligns with a pattern of sidestepping difficult realities. It recalls an episode where the vast majority of elected Democrat in Washington acquiesced to an incumbent's determination to seeking another term right up until a disastrous televised debate compelled an exit.

Concurrently, large majorities of Democratic voters had been repeatedly informing researchers that they did not want the incumbent to run again.

Financial Concerns

A substantive analysis would also probe matters about campaign spending, including the amounts flowed to insider consultants as well as media firms over the course of an electoral effort that managed to spend a colossal amount in a short period.

A Broader Problem

At its core, the secrecy regarding the analysis highlights a submission to the established hierarchy who engineered an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The implication to rank-and-file members – which includes millions of loyal volunteers – appears to be that they do not have a right to see the lessons the leadership say they discovered from an analysis based on feedback from all states.

A party unable to publicly examine its mistakes finds it difficult to escape the cycle that proved so helpful to the winning candidate.
