Historical Context
Forest vs Malmö and memories of 1979. The these sides have a special connection, also meeting in Forest's most recent continental tour in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the continental championship decades past that links these clubs, with the record-breaking signing the English forward netting the decisive goal of a largely forgettable match to secure historic victory for the red half of Nottingham.
"Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the colour and celebration, stood for a moment on a bench quietly watching the celebrations," wrote the match reporter. Their achievement was an extraordinary accomplishment that it is unlikely to be replicated – from the lower league to continental competition in just three years."
One should note to pause a little on Malmö, who became the pioneering and only Scandinavian side to reach the final under manager Houghton.
This match is a very different to that summit, closer perhaps to the earlier European encounter between Forest and Malmö in the mid-nineties. Forest are absolutely buzzing after defeating Liverpool convincingly at Liverpool's home on Saturday, while Malmö haven't kicked a competitive ball since early November following the conclusion of their domestic campaign. The general expectation is on the Forest tonight.
Numerous other matches on offer in this live coverage. Rangers have already been beaten by a Braga this season. Rangers are last place of the 36-team Europa League standings at the middle of the initial phase with no points whatsoever. They badly want a victory if they are to have any hope of making a recovery for a qualification place.
Coverage will persist with all nine of the 8pm kick-offs and provide the current standings from the previous games, including the Birmingham match and Feyenoord v Celtic.
