European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
