Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
