The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.
