These were the sentiments of Paul Canoville, the man who earned his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their new head coach after the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the multi-club ownership group which also controls the London club.

There have been a mere 12 of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including individuals in interim positions – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he was raised and played not far from here, he knows this community," added Canoville.

"When youngsters see a figure like Rosenior in charge of their club, someone who looks like them, from a similar background, who comes from a household that fights for what's right… that's profound demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, it is a huge moment for Chelsea, for London, for all young person with big dreams.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Exactly Do the Numbers Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became the Blues' head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's inaugural black head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince became the first English black boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present Premier League boss of colour.

The scarcity of ethnic minority managers across English football corresponds with an absence of representation in the boardroom.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's report, 43% of Premier League footballers come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, research from the equality organization revealed only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic backgrounds.

At first-team coaching level, according to figures provided by 11 clubs, the figure stands at 2%.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of him being announced as a the Chelsea head coach, and we hope to witness more such appointments," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of talent present in the black and underrepresented groups... they want a chance to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to continue to work hard to break those obstacles once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become one of only four full-time British managers presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's other major leagues in terms of national representation.

16 out of twenty top-flight coaches in Serie A are from Italy, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany and Ten in Ligue 1 in France.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, he explained the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" or "passionate", noting that he could relate to the Dutch player with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to Chelsea this summer.

In further newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" to hear a staff member make a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and authored an open letter to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" prejudice.

He has subsequently built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their time together at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

The Blues had the Premier League's first black manager in Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.

Elliott later held multiple executive roles, including the Football Association's diversity and inclusion board|
